Supported the Guatemala Healing Hands Foundation

"It was the most amazing and most fulfilling experience of my life. They (Guatemalan’s) were just grateful for the help. Everyone hugs you, kisses you, they trust you will help them… A lot of what we learned you cannot write down on paper. They lead completely different lives than you do. It takes you down to what health care should be, which is one person helping another."
- Rebecca von der Heyde, MA OTR CHT, Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy at Maryville University, Guatemala Healing Hands Volunteer, AAHS Member
The Hand Surgery Endowment will support of the Guatemala Healing Hands Foundation again in 2011.
Made the Vargas International Hand Therapist Teaching Award possible
The Vargas International Hand Therapist Teaching Award is named in honor of Dr. Miguel Vargas, a Hand Surgeon who practiced in Puerto Rico and was an international emissary for education. The Award fosters an exchange of educational ideas and practices between AAHS therapists and therapists in host countries to improve patient care for upper extremity problems. Therapists travel in conjunction with a hand surgeon so that surgical procedures and therapeutic management can be presented in a concerted manner. The Vargas Award Committee will soon be accepting applications in 2011 for the 2012 Award cycle.
